Parliament’s winter session begins today: Opposition creates ruckus over SIR

New Delhi: The winter session of Parliament has begun today, which will run from December 1, 2025, to December 19, 2025. Today, on the first day of the winter session, the opposition parties created a huge ruckus in the House regarding SIR. The opposition was demanding a discussion on SIR in the House.

PM Modi’s ‘drama’ taunt

Before the session began, PM Modi targeted the opposition, saying that Parliament should not be used as an election ‘warm-up arena’ or a place to vent frustration over defeat. He said there was plenty of room for drama, but only delivery mattered. He also stressed the need to give first-time MPs a chance and expressed hope that the session would be productive.

Opposition reacted strongly to the PM’s statement.

Mallikarjun Kharge (Congress President & LoP, Rajya Sabha) called PM Modi the “biggest dramabaaz” and accused him of “trampling” Parliamentary decorum for the last 11 years. He said that the PM has “delivered drama” instead of discussing issues. Other parties including TMC and Samajwadi Party also cornered the government on this issue. He said that if raising public issues is a drama, then they will continue to do so.

Uproar in the House

This political war of words also affected House proceedings. In both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, opposition members created a ruckus, demanding a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and other issues. The opposition alleged that the Election Commission of India (ECI) was acting under pressure and that names were being removed from the voter list.

Due to this uproar, the proceedings of both the Houses had to be adjourned for the entire day, while some bills like the Manipur GST Bill were introduced in the Lok Sabha. Overall, the first day was very heated and there are chances of uproar in the Parliament.
